I was doing some cleanup of the garage tonight, and found this metal strap tucked up in the rafters. It wasn’t attached to anything. It’s roughly an inch wide, and probably at least a good 8-10 feet long. It looks like it is made of galvanized steel. The ends look like this:
Any guesses?

Maybe strapping for wood crates. The only reason I’m not sure is I’ve never seen the edges curled around like that. Also can’t tell how wide it is. It sort of looks a lot wider than strapping for crates would be.

... Lumber Bandsaw blank?
No clue.
Probably some kind of trim for the house or barn.

I don’t know, but it looks critically important. Better put it back exactly where you found it.

I’m thinking more the Jurassic Park philosophy:”Is it heavy? Yeah. Then it’s expensive. Put it down.” In this case, it’s not heavy. :P

I was going to say “Not too likely”, as we don’t get hurricanes up here, but we do have some seriously strong winds (e.g.: 100 km/h).

It’s roughly 1" wide. Given that the only holes seem to be at the ends, it makes me wonder.

Maybe it’s a... flange ?

Strap to combine trusses? are there any other ones in your garage?

I don’t see any other ones, and there are only holes in the end of the strap. It really is odd.
Given that it wasn’t attached to anything, I’m tempted to re-purpose it.

It seems way too long for something like that. Either that, or it’d have to be from a very very large barrel. (Like 4 + feet in diameter).

It looks like it’s a diagonal brace. You’d attach it on the top and bottom plate of the wall and it will help to keep the wall square. Sometimes they use straps like that on exterior walls that are covered in insulation boards in lieu of plywood.

It somehow doesn’t surprise me that it wasn’t nailed down. The way this garage was constructed, I’m beginning to think it was made by a bunch of drunken monkeys. I’ve had several pieces of soffit blow out, I found the weather sealing to the garage door kicking around in the garage, and the wiring isn’t all that well done/clean/organized. I’m slowly trying to whip it into shape to get it insulated for next winter.

If it’s eight to ten feet long then that’s a 2.5' to 3' wide barrel. So seems about right. Or maybe one of those barrel style planters old people put in their yards.
